Vegetation Integrated into the Retaining Wall
The project features multiple plant species, including Western Sword Fern (Polystichum munitum). The vegetation methods include live planting directly into the facing and hydroseeding. Full establishment of the live planted vegetated zone is typically expected within 1-2 years of planting. The hydroseeded portion will establish within nine months. An integrated drip irrigation system installed by the contractor will support plant establishment as the vegetated MSE wall develops. This approach allows the retaining wall to function as part of the site’s landscape rather than simply as a structural boundary—an important consideration for projects incorporating green infrastructure, sustainable retaining walls and landscape architecture
A Retaining Wall Solution for Challenging Site Access
A key advantage of Flex MSE on this Burnaby project was the system’s smaller unit size, which simplified both site transport and installation. Projects with challenging or restricted site access can also benefit from the flexibility of the Flex MSE system. Each geomodular unit weighs approximately 75 lbs and can be handled by the installation crew without the heavy lifting equipment typically required to place large rock or precast retaining wall components.
